About This Grass

Why Zoysia Works in New Orleans Yards

Three years after a Zoysia installation, the maintenance picture looks like this: watering every seven to ten days instead of twice a week, mowing every ten to fourteen days instead of weekly, and a lawn dense enough that weeds have almost no foothold. Getting to that point takes a full growing season, and that timeline is the honest trade the crew at Big Easy Sod explains before every Zoysia job.

The establishment window is real. Zoysia spreads more slowly than Bermuda and takes four to six weeks before it can handle light foot traffic. In a NOLA summer, consistent deep watering during that window is non-negotiable. Cut back too early and the establishment drags further. Get through it, and you have a grass that needs less water than St. Augustine, less mowing than Bermuda, and resists weeds better than either.

Zoysia handles partial shade reasonably well, up to two to three hours of reduced sun daily, though it will thin significantly under a heavy live oak canopy. Its preferred range is full to partial sun. The mowing height is 2 to 2.5 inches, and its slow growth rate means that mowing interval is genuinely every ten to fourteen days through peak season rather than the five to seven days Bermuda demands.

I just had the best experience with Big Easy Sod. I ordered 6 pallets of St Augustine sod, and it was delivered quickly by a courteous driver who made sure that when he brought in this huge load to lay down across my yard, everything looked perfect! The grass has taken root now too, so there's no doubt about how fresh-from-the-cut pieces are because they're all flourishing together beautifully. Talk about an amazing job done by these guys!

FAQ

Zoysia Sod: Common Questions

Zoysia is a strong choice for New Orleans yards with full to partial sun. It handles the heat and humidity well, requires less watering than St. Augustine after establishment, and its dense growth habit resists weeds better than most warm-season grasses. The main consideration is that Zoysia establishes more slowly than Bermuda, so homeowners who want quick results sometimes choose Bermuda instead.

Zoysia typically takes four to six weeks before it can handle light foot traffic and a full growing season to reach complete density. It is slower to establish than Bermuda but comparable to St. Augustine. Consistent deep watering during the first four to six weeks is the most important factor. In NOLA summer heat, cutting back on watering before roots have fully anchored will stall the entire establishment process.

Zeon is the top choice for most New Orleans residential yards. It has a fine blade, excellent density, and the best shade adaptability of any Zoysia we install, which matters in a city with significant oak canopy. El Toro is a good alternative for full-sun yards where faster growth is a priority. For Northshore properties that see colder winters, JaMur offers better cold hardiness than Zeon.

Once established, Zoysia needs watering only every seven to ten days under normal summer conditions, less than St. Augustine or Bermuda. During the first four to six weeks after installation, water daily. After that, deep infrequent watering encourages deeper root growth, which improves drought tolerance through the hottest parts of the NOLA summer.

Zoysia handles partial shade better than Bermuda but not as well as St. Augustine or Palmetto. It can perform adequately with two to three hours of direct sun daily. Yards under a heavy live oak canopy with less than two hours of sun will see Zoysia thin significantly over time. For those conditions, Palmetto St. Augustine is a better fit.

Thatch buildup is the most common issue. Zoysia's dense growth habit produces thatch faster than other warm-season grasses, and in NOLA humidity, heavy thatch layers can trap moisture and cause fungal problems. Annual dethatching keeps it in check. The second issue is establishment time. Homeowners who compare Zoysia's four to six week establishment window against Bermuda's three weeks sometimes wish they had chosen Bermuda if they needed a usable lawn quickly.
