Choosing the wrong grass for a New Orleans yard is one of the most common and expensive landscaping mistakes homeowners make. Bermuda installed under an oak canopy. Centipede put into heavy clay. Floratam in a yard that floods. Each fails inside two seasons, and the cost is the install all over again. The right choice depends on three things: how much direct sun your yard gets, what the soil is like, and how much wear the lawn will take.

New Orleans presents a specific set of conditions that narrow the field. The city averages 64 inches of rain per year, which means standing water tolerance matters more here than in most markets. Live oak canopy covers significant portions of Uptown, the Garden District, Mid-City, Lakeview, and Metairie, making shade tolerance a primary selection criterion for those areas. The clay-heavy soil common across much of the metro affects drainage, pH, and how well roots can anchor in the first weeks after installation.

Big Easy Sod installs five warm-season grass varieties across the New Orleans metro. St. Augustine is the most widely installed because it handles the combination of shade, heat, and clay better than anything else. Bermuda is the right call for full-sun yards with high foot traffic. Zoysia offers a lower-maintenance option once established. Centipede works in the specific soil and sun conditions where it belongs. And Palmetto, a St. Augustine cultivar, is the answer for yards where standard St. Augustine would thin out under heavy canopy.

Each variety has a context where it outperforms the others. The comparison below covers what you need to know to make the right call for your yard.

FAQ

Grass Sod in New Orleans: Common Questions.

St. Augustine is the best-performing grass for most New Orleans yards. The LSU AgCenter identifies it as the most shade-tolerant warm-season turfgrass available, which matters in a city where live oak canopy covers a large portion of residential properties. It also handles NOLA clay soil and the high humidity better than most alternatives. For full-sun yards with high foot traffic, Bermuda is often the stronger choice. The right answer depends on your specific yard conditions.

Palmetto St. Augustine is the top choice for shaded New Orleans yards. It is a semi-dwarf cultivar bred to perform with three to four hours of direct sun per day, compared to six or more required by standard Floratam. Standard St. Augustine is the next best option for partial shade. Bermuda and Centipede both struggle significantly under tree canopy and should not be installed in shaded yards.

Start with three questions. How many hours of direct sun does your yard receive daily? What is your soil like: clay, loamy, or sandy? And how much foot traffic will the lawn get? A yard with six-plus hours of sun and active kids points to Bermuda. A shaded front yard in Uptown points to Palmetto. A low-use yard with good acidic soil in a loamy zone is a Centipede candidate. Big Easy Sod assesses all three factors before recommending any variety.

St. Augustine performs best in New Orleans clay soil. Its extensive root system anchors well in dense soil and tolerates the drainage limitations common in clay-heavy lots. Zoysia also does reasonably well in clay. Centipede is the most sensitive to heavy clay and high soil pH and should only be installed where soil conditions are confirmed to be suitable.

Centipede is the lowest-maintenance warm-season grass when installed in the right conditions. It needs one fertilization per year, minimal water once established, and mows every two to three weeks during the growing season. Zoysia is the second-lowest maintenance option and is more forgiving of variable soil conditions. St. Augustine requires more inputs than either but is far more adaptable to the range of conditions found across the New Orleans metro.

Spring is the best time to install sod in New Orleans, from late March through May. Soil temperatures are rising, the grass is coming out of dormancy, and roots establish more aggressively before peak summer heat. Summer installation is possible but requires more intensive watering during establishment. Fall installation works for some varieties but gives less time for roots to anchor before cooler temperatures slow growth.

Sod installation costs in New Orleans vary based on yard size, site preparation needs, and grass variety. Premium varieties like TifTuf Bermuda or Zeon Zoysia cost more per pallet than Common Bermuda or standard St. Augustine. Sites with drainage issues, old turf removal, or grading work required add to the project cost. Big Easy Sod provides itemized quotes after assessing the site, with no estimate that changes at install.

Yes. Every Big Easy Sod project starts with a yard assessment before any recommendation is made. We evaluate sun exposure, soil type, drainage patterns, and how you use the space. We do not recommend the most expensive variety. We recommend the one most likely to establish and stay healthy in your specific conditions. The assessment is free and there is no pressure to commit.
